Michelin tyres continue their energy drive with Dundee plant consumption cuts  09/04/2015

For a long time Michelin tyres have been one of the market leaders at developing tyres which use less energy to enable cars to travel further on one tank of petrol. The companies range of tyres have improved year on year as the brand have invested millions of pounds, and they now sell tyres which can travel up to 50,000 miles without needing to be changed, decreasing their environmental impact.

This week the firm announced they have taken their green credentials one step further with the introduction of a new water cooling tower at their factory in Dundee, which will process water and reduce the amount of energy the factory uses.

Michelin believe that the new tower will cut 1500 MWh from the energy consumption of the Dundee factory every year, which will cut its environmental impact considerably.

The new factory was installed by Control Techniques, who are an Emerson Industrial Action firm and they will oversee the running of the tower, by controlling the level of the fan speed and pump speed to make sure the supply and demand levels match at all times.

The new move has apparently left the plant using as much power as it takes to boil a cup of tea, when the cooling plant is in idle mode.

Project manager of the new cooling tower, Mike Barklie explained how the new tower would save money. He told us, I measured actual cooling requirements and realised that there were further potential savings to be made by putting in variable-speed drives to match the supply of cooling water to demand.

It was a major investment, but we have achieved a tremendously successful result that has a return on investment of less than three years.

According to the statistics released by Michelin, the fans in the water cooling tower will consume just 2.5kW when the fans are at 40% of their full speed, which is the same power consumption as a household kettle, and were a massive 87.5kW less than the old tower, and saving of several thousand percent.
