Bridgestone developing a tyre without air 31/03/2015
Japanese tyre giant Bridgestone today announced that they were
developing a tyre without air, having already made a concept model which
they have been showing off in Japan. Bridgestone believe their new tyre
will eventually replace the standard tyre as we know it today, and
could spell an end for tyres with air in them.
Whilst it is possible to make tyres without air in them at the
moment, they are not environmentally friendly, and users will find that
recycling them is far more difficult. On top of that they offer far more
rolling resistance and are heavier, meaning cars use more petrol to get
where they need to go.
The new tyre is part of Bridgestone's continued commitment to the
environment, and is just one of the many projects the company is working
on to reduce their carbon footprint, as part of their Environmental
Mission Statement.
The new airless tyre is another non-pneumatic tyre, the like of which we have seen before, but Bridgestone tyres
claim this is a tyre that could be mass produced, mass recycled and
could actually come to the market. The tyre is made up of a structure of
spokes, which are wound in a specific way that they can still flex,
while at the same time support the outer sides of the tyre.
The new tyres would not require any air, and would never lose
pressure, making for more economical, and safer driving. Like run flat
tyres, the new tyres would not lose their shape if they developed a
puncture, so the days of blow outs would be long gone, and with the
entire tyre being recyclable, we would no longer have huge tyre heaps
blighting the countryside all over the world.
Whilst the tyre is an exciting new concept, Bridgestone did admit it
could still be a while until they can bring them into production. In
the mean time we argue customers to concentrate on the added safety
offered by run flat tyres, which are the latest technology to be offered
to the mass market.
